Edward Whymper SCRAMBLES AMONGST THE ALPS IN THE YEARS 1860-69.    John Murray. 1871 The author's own PROOF copy of the true 1st. edition (of which only 1575 copies were printed.   pp432.  does NOT have the 21 full page engravings, 90 text engravings or 5 maps. This pre-publication copy is in it's own unique (first design) original maroon cloth, bevelled boards and undecorated sp. design which was finally superseded by that of green cloth and ornate gilt spine decoration. The pages are not bound being a pre-publication proof in which Whymper has made many corrections in his own hand, in ink, see p.184 with E.W., not included in the First Edition, but were later in the Fourth Thousand edition. The desirability of this copy speaks for itself being Whymper's own rare copy of 'the most famous of all mountaineering books'!
